The NYTs reports this morning that the interpreter for the Der Spiegel interview worked for Maliki’s office, not the magazine.
Der Spiegel provided The Times with an audio recording of the Maliki interview which the Times had independently interpreted. The Times confirmed that Maliki "seemed to state a clear affinity for Mr. Obama’s position, bringing it up on his own[!] in an answer to a general question on troop presence".
Finally, the Times and WaPo confirm that the nonretraction retraction came at the request of the White House.
