Misunderestimating Sarah Palin?

I was told at lunch today that I might be underestimating the impact on Sarah Palin on the election.

As those who know me will attest, I have a long history of misunderestimating Republicans and it's entirely possible that I'm doing so again. Nevertheless, I'm standing by my original assessment.

When the hangover sets in the next week or two, Gov Palin will be widely seen as an empty suit and big mistake, that doesn't attract sufficient independent voters to put the campaign over 50%.

Frankly, I'm puzzled by the whole McCain strategy at this point. They seem to be running a campaign designed to protect a comfortable lead that they don't have.

Their strategy for Palin seems to be to make her as embattled as possible as the country is introduced to her and I don't see how that works either.

But what do I know? I think the economy is the most important issue and the McCain campaign says issues don't matter.
